About the Event

This is the new and improved condensed beginner’s course in which we make fine bindings using traditional methods.

The New Beginning Bookbinding is divided into two sections,

Part 1: Single Section Case Bound and Part 2: Flat Back Case Bound.

Part 1: Single Section Case Bound

In this first 2-day workshop we will cover the tools and techniques of hand bookbinding, and all materials such as paper, boards, adhesives and cloth will be discussed.

You will learn how to fold and tear pages from a parent sheet of paper the old-fashioned way with a paper knife. We will then cover the measuring and cutting of the end sheets, hinge cloth, bookboard, bookcloth and decorative cover paper all of which is built up around your sewn text block. After assembling the cover, you will learn how to case in the text block and press the finished book. If you are faster moving student, you may have time to make two books.

This class will help you build a stronger base in crafting your handmade books and you will have the basic knowledge to create other structures like those found in how-to books.

I will provide all materials and tools except for the PVA glue and a cutting mat.

This workshop is the pre-requisite for Part 2: Flat Back Case Bound course.
